Super 8 -Tri-x Cross-Processed + 64T

Recent transfer done here at Frame Discreet.
Tri-x Cross processed at Niagara Custom Lab. As well as some Ektachrome 64T.
I absolutely love the look of Tri-x cross processed. It creates a sharp grainy texture that almost feels like pointalism. Just gorgeous. Tri-x also gains more latitude when cross-processed giving you more detail in the highlights & shadows.
Thanks to Babar Khan for shooting some great footage!

TECHNICAL POST- 70fps super 8

Friday, January 11th, 2008

Super 8, 7218 (vision 2 500T negative). Shot at 70fps with Beaulieu 4008zmII Schneider 6-66 lens. Speed ramp in the first shot, started overexposed by 1 1/2 stops. Did not adjust the iris. Image darkens slightly, could have corrected for that in post by creating a ramp in gamma correction… Pleased with the way the neg holds up in over exposure. Did the same test on a different reel, starting out with proper exposure at 24fps- letting it ramp to underexposure at 70fps. It became too dark, lost detail. Better results when overexposing at 24fps, letting it ramp to proper exposure at 70fps. Super 8 stability/registration issues are not as noticeable because it is handheld.

TRAILER: "Kobo Town"

Tuesday, January 8th, 2008

A documentary that Justin shot in 2007 for the Caribbean Tales Heart Beat series. Great band, great music.

TRAILER: "A Winter Tale"

Sunday, January 6th, 2008

Here’s a trailer for a short film I was 2nd unit on. I was operating B-Cam (shooting pickups, and inserts- everything in the trailer that doesn’t have sync sound was shot by Justin on his Bolex. Shot 50D and 500T V2 STD 16mm cropped to 16:9 for video, but was blown up for the film out to 35mm). It was a great project to be involved in with a great crew at Leda Serene Films.

Inexpensive 16mm stock…!

Thursday, January 3rd, 2008

Stock: Kodak 3374 High Contrast 16mm. Processed as a neg by Niagara Custom Lab.
Camera: Filmo 16mm, with Angenieux 5.9mm
Content: Street shots from the Toronto Board Meeting 2006 (shot by Justin while riding a dirtsurfer + interior hand-cranked footage.
Technical: Cross-Processed as a negative to give more latitude for the transfer. A grainless 16mm stock rated between 40-60ASA. Absolutely gorgeous stock, when you nail your exposure. Originally a Panchromatic sound recording stock but can be used for images- 2100′ can be bought for under $200 direct from Kodak…!

Behind the Scenes- "Ten for Grandpa"

Frame Discreet cinematographer Guy Godfree runs the show with a beautifully orchestrated shot. You don’t get to see all of the magic in the camera move, but you get a sense of what he was up to. Shot on super 35 at Wallace studios in Toronto. Justin Lovell makes a cameo adding some fill to the shot.

Here’s the shot from the video tap on the camera.

Comparison Transfer

Friday, December 28th, 2007

Tomislav had his home movies transferred somewhere else originally. He was not happy with the results. He contacted us with a request to see if we could do a better job than the original transfer he had done elsewhere …. See the video above.

He brought us 8000′ of his home movies to have them re-transferred here at Frame Discreet.

Though heavily compressed for web, the posted video gives you an idea of what we’re capable of.

Still frame from Tomislav’s regular 8mm transfer. Seems appropriate for the time of the season.

Justin Lovell shooting a DOC pitched for CBC/Global

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

So here we go. Frame Discreet is goin’ online with a Blog.
Crazy busy over here with the holiday rush. Just got back from shooting a doc pitched for the CBC and Global about a Canadian held in China facing execution. Shooting HD with the HVX to a Firestore drive. Its quirky at times, but provides a pretty good image. Sorry, no film on this project.
