Kodak tri-x super 8mm 7266 cross processed

Frame grab from my recent shoot in the Azores.  A crazy bull fight in the local village street.  Captured on Kodak Tri-X 7266. Cross-processed at Niagara Custom Lab to give it more detail in the shadows/highlights and grittier grain.  Perfect texture for the wild content!  Shot on our Beaulieu 4008 ZMII with a 45 degree shutter at 70fps.

Wrapped shooting an ultimate fan fight spot for ign’s start channel on youtube. Had an awesome team. Dappled light over the 2 days of shooting was difficult to work with to keep a consistency. Used 1 Dedo led, 2 ice lights, a 8×8 micro silver bounce, mirror board, and various large black solids and bounces to sculpt and shape the existing light. Original plan was to use negative fill to add contrast, however in practice, I quickly found that using the micro silver to bring up the exposure on the faces was a better plan of attack. Keep your eyes out for it releasing early September!

Shooting some 70fps super 8 tri-x of a crazy bull fight in the street in Tricera.   The first bull that came out charged right at us..  Should have known better than to trust another tourist who said we’d be safe there.

Shooting with my beautiful beaulieu 4008zm II and Schneider 6-66 the wide/fast lens.  The landscapes and textures here are stunning. Day 1 shooting tri-x, going to cross process for thicker grain and more shadow/highlights detail. So bright..  Having the variable shutter is also helping to let me shoot a lower tstop.  Got some neat 40fps shots of teens jumping into the Rio!

Aired on Bravo! before the Juno’s 2011. Produced by David Brady Productions. Archival film scanned in 2k with us.  Recent super 8 shot on our MAX 8 1014xls by Frame Discreet cinematographer Michael Leblanc. Really gives a nice gritty yet warm edge to the character profiles.  Tired of seeing all the crisp HD video footage, the editor was begging us to shoot more super 8, he loved cutting it in!

Frame grab from some Super 8 500T shot on my Nizo 481 when I was touring Iceland’s hot springs.  What an amazing country!  The Nizo 481 rates 500T at 160ASA, so you must be careful and use manual exposure to avoid overexposing your images.  Although it is possible to get an image when it is overexposed, you will sacrifice saturation and contrast in doing so.  Often leading to a less grainy image, but in turn can lead to digital noise from the scanner having to work extra hard to pull detail out of the overexposed negative.

Ryan Johnson regular 8mm HD film transfer

It’s amazing what can sometimes be found hidden between the sprocket holes.  Some cameras had wider gates than what was seen through the camera’s viewfinder.  Typical transfer systems aren’t able to show this extra area.  We modified our scanner allowing us to see as much as possible.  In this case we discovered a hidden member of the family!  Thanks for having us archive your film Ryan Johnson!

Shot was double exposed using a Canon 1014xls. Short film is titled 100 Musicians, shot on RED. Was a fun shoot – on location in a loft in Kensington Market/Toronto!

Cross processing really makes the greens POP!  (though this look can be dialed back and neutralized in our color correction, I loved the way it looked for this film).  Shot in Iceland on a Nizo 481 beside a stunning waterfall.  Super 8mm cross processed at Niagara Custom Lab.

Curious about the difference between Super 8 & Regular 8?
Here is a visual comparison for you (super 8 on the right).

Super 8mm changes/improvements:
– Smaller sprocket hole results in more useable image area on the film left to right.
– better resolution & sharper images due to a bigger image recorded on the film
– trade off – film came in a ‘cartridge’. Convenient, however… the cartridge has a built in plastic pressure plate. Regular 8mm came on a spool, and the used the camera’s metal pressure plate. The pressure plate is critical for having good registration / less jitter. So while regular 8mm could potentially produce more stable images, the images may not be as high resolution (softer).

I still love threading up an old regular 8mm camera though. They’re so beautiful and have features many super 8 cameras do not have! Want to get some regular 8mm film? Try

She’s up and running… our new DAVINCI RESOLVE colour grading suite.  We’ve been secretly building this system over the past 5 months- testing and educating ourselves on what it’s capable of.   It’s awesome!  It provides so much more control with our raw film data scans.  We’re pumped!

Our clients asked for it.. so we researched it.  Now with our new suite, we can offer ProRes files!

Some gritty looking Tri-X cross processed at Niagara Custom Lab and some hand processed by Mike Hoolboom himself. Looks great, perfect texture for the weird visuals he was documenting.  I think some of this was at the Toronto Zombie walk. Very cool!

We must give credit to Maxime Desmons who shot all of these great images. We’re finding that the colours in Extachrome 100D are reminiscent of the wonderfully saturated colours of Kodachrome. With Kodak’s improvements in film technology, it almost looks like what their 16mm grain structure used to look like but on Super 8mm!

500T holds up to low light situations beautifully. The natural window light on Tri-x has a painterly quality when cross processed. When compared to normal processing (as reversal), this method of cross processing gives a softer transition into the shadows creating less contrast. Normal and cross processing can be requested at Niagara Custom Lab.

Just got back from a 2 week trip shooting super 8 all around Iceland. It was an incredible journey, renting a little VW polo and traveling around the whole ring of iceland. Shot 4 rolls of ektachrome 100d, and 3 rolls of 500t color negative. Going to cross process the 100d to really POP the blues, yellows and greens of the insane landscapes. Shot all with my new NIZO 481… Can’t wait to see the 54fps shots of humpback whales that swam right by our boat! If you haven’t been… it’s a trip you just have to do!
