A great little trailer for Bridget Redmond’s 8mm/16mm film. www.firstkissfilms.com. She has a great instinct for capturing the essence of the moment. Choosing film as her paintbrush adds a wonderful layer of emotion 🙂

Frame Discreet is Moving!

Wednesday, April 16th, 2014

Exciting news – we’re expanding our services!

As of MAY 02 2014:

We are moving out of the Bellwoods location to make things more accessible for you.  Our new downtown space is conveniently located at 136 Geary ave (just north east of Dupont and Dufferin).

To facilitate creative collaboration and share ideas and inspiration with other filmmakers, we’re moving into a space with IPS film studios.  They offer an array of services from pre production to post and fully equipped green/white shooting space.  A great space to assist independent productions.

Unless previous arrangements have been made (feel free to reach out to us), we’re asking that all new orders wait until May 02.

We will be announcing a launch party soon and would love to have you see the new space.

A testimonial by Ryder White & Alexandra Caulfield.

Monday, April 14th, 2014

“Our project involved teaching film workshops in small and rural towns all across Canada in which participants learned to shoot and hand process their own Super 8mm movies. The seventy-odd rolls that comprised our collection by the end were beautiful and fantastic, but having been developed in buckets in an improvised mobile darkroom and subsequently projected several times, they were in rough shape.

The final product of this effort was to be a gallery exhibition in Vancouver that would showcase the films in ten separate projections so that visitors could “walk through” the images. Analog projection was out of the question for logistical reasons, so we turned to Frame Discreet for digitization. And what a result! After what must have surely been a challenging prep task, Lianna pulled off impressive timing on the footage and was even able to accommodate our request for a sped-up timeline after we were offered an earlier opening date at our gallery.

Thank you so much, Frame Discreet! You’re the best!

Super 8 used in documentary credits!

Great use of super 8 to tie together the end credits in Ross’s film.  Subtle and just feels right. A great example of how to use the format.

Thank you Ross, for having us a part of your film!

4 Days In April – Trailer

Sunday, April 14th, 2013

4 Days in April : The Mike Weir Story – Trailer from Project10 on Vimeo.
Director: Kevin Foley
Producer: Byron Kent Wong / Project 10
Cinematographer: Justin Lovell / Vinnit Borrison
Camera: SI2K mini / Cinedeck Recorder / Linos/Kowa Prime Lenses / Switar 16-100 zoom / Red Epic

Trailer for the Mike Weir Documentary I shot with Project 10.  Airing on TSN / GLOBAL before the 2013 Masters.  Shot 90% on our si2k cinema package alongside Vinnit Borrison and his Red Epic.  One of the most exciting projects that I’ve been on.  Not as dangerous as some of the docs I’ve worked on and not as extreme as some of the action films I’ve shot.  However, I grew up on a golf range we built.  Spent my time filling divots, cutting grass and picking up and washing golf balls every day.  Both my father and bro are PGA members so I grew up with golf in my blood.  It was like a dream come true interviewing my childhood heroes.  An opportunity I won’t ever forget.  I love being a cinematographer.

Exciting news – we’re expanding our services!

You asked for it and we listened!

To make things more accessible for you, our new location downtown is conveniently located in the beautiful Trinity Bellwoods Area at 65 Bellwoods Ave (between Queen & Dundas).

Creating a hub to share ideas and inspiration with other filmmakers, we’re neighbours with the friendly folks at Charles Street Video (CSV), a non-profit, artist-run centre that rents editing rooms, cameras and production gear.

In an effort to keep downtime as short as possible, we’re asking that all new orders wait until February 8th.

We will be announcing a launch party soon and would love to have you see the new space.

Deepa Mehta Interview for NFB

Sunday, November 11th, 2012

Deepa Mehta In Profile by Nettie Wild, National Film Board of Canada

Shooting 2nd camera alongside Frame Discreet Cinematographer John Price, it was a pleasure to have had the opportunity to listen to Deepa Mehta speak about filmmaking. Another great project to be involved in.

This short film is a tribute to award-winning director and screenwriter Deepa Mehta. A true cultural hybrid, Mehta has been described as a “transnational” artist, able to tell universally meaningful stories from a uniquely Canadian point of view. In a career spanning over 30 years she has consistently broken new ground, tackling such controversial issues as intolerance, cultural discrimination and domestic violence. As an Indian who grew up speaking English first in a British Colonial School and then learning Hindi, she finds her passion and her stories in India, and the freedom to choose how to tell those stories in Canada.

+ tongtong creative branding

Thursday, October 25th, 2012

A new creative I shot for John Tong to reflect the fresh approach that his company is taking. Directed by our friend, the talented Byron Wong. Fun shoot utilizing an innocent simplicity to introduce + tongtong.

+tongtong, directed by founder John Tong, will extend the hands-on approach of John’s 25+year career as a celebrated designer and leader. Formerly a co-founding principal of 3rd UNCLE design, John and his team will continue to create contemporary environments and objects in celebration of people & place. John’s experience is steeped in design and creativity and believes the future of design exists in cultivating relationships between diverse disciplines, collaboration and sharing of visions.

Ferrari 458 Feature

Monday, October 22nd, 2012

A short monolog featuring Robert Herjavec explaining what makes the Ferrari 458 so special. He explains this while driving around the track at top speed.

Exciting shoot I was Cinematographer and responsible for multiple cameras.  We had out 2 sony f800s, steadicam & segway,  techno crane,  ezfx jib &  8′ dolly,  si2k, 3 GoPros, multiple car mounts and red Epic for high speed sexy shots.  Had a great autonomous team who were able to execute our demanding shooting schedule. Show is currently in the pitching stages with broadcasters.  Thanks Fadoo Productions.

Watch “Protecting What Matters” on YouTube

Sunday, October 21st, 2012

Recent commercial I camera operated for Frame Discreet Cinematographer Mikhail Petrenko. Was a great experience. See below for his notes

Today was the official launch of the ad campaign by ATU Local 113 called Protecting What Matters. Together with AIRCASTLE Productions we spent over three months working on 23 print ads, 2 web videos, 3 TV and one 90 second theatrical ad. Capturing TTC maintenance workers in operating subway tunnels, maintenance shops and service facilities was an exciting challenge, therefore we decided to use extreme slow motion approach to create the right atmosphere and communicate the message. Our weapons of choice were Phantom Flex by Vision Research and Red Epic provided by SIM Digital, Lighting and Grip by WHITES and Color Correction by AIRCASTLE. Huge THANK YOU to our crew who were always on the ball no mater how many thousands fps cameras were set for. The theatrical version is playing in virtually every theater in town, or if you miss it, watch it HERE.

Shooting Toronto Rock commercial spots

Friday, October 19th, 2012

image image

This was a fun spot to light.  Initial plan was to hit him from above with 4 2k blonds into a giant soft box,  but in the end I simply keyed it with a long 4×2 kino flo.  This gave a much smaller cleaner reflection in the helmet.  Back lit with a couple long 4x4s and 2 2k blonds bounced off the roof to get a little more shape to the helmet. Tackled it more like car photography. To make it sexy, it is all about the symmetry of the reflections in the player’s helmet.

Thanks to my great team and our wonderful friends at Pie in the Sky studio.
